4 Day / 3 Night Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
DAY 1: NAIROBI TO KIGALI
Make your way to Nairobi airport for your flight to Kigali. Arrival in Kigali. On arrival clients will be met by a driver and private vehicle and driven to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. The roads are good and the journey to Ruhengeri will take approximately two hours. On arrival a late lunch will be served in the main lodge, with its scenic vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes, of the Parc National des Volcans. Afternoon at leisure to settle in and acclimatize and perhaps an afternoon guided bird walk in the surrounds of the lodge. Dinner and overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.
DAY 2: GORILLA TREK
Today you will embark on your first Gorilla trek. In the Park National des Volcans in Rwanda there are eight families of Mountain Gorilla living on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes that you can trek to see. For many, seeing gorillas in the wild offers a wildlife experience of a lifetime.
Gorilla treks take place in the morning and depart from the Park Headquarters at around 07:30am. Prior to departure you are given a briefing by park staff, assigned a gorilla family to visit and rangers to guide you. The treks take place on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes and clients should be in good physical condition as some of the trek can be physically demanding. The treks normally start in the cultivated land on the base of the volcanoes and then you are guided up into the beautiful dense misty forests. The trek normally lasts between 2 and 5 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family and a maximum of eight visitors is allowed per gorilla family. Once you reach the gorillas you are permitted to stay for one hour to view them. The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years. Overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (B, L, D)
DAY 3:
Today you have a choice of another gorilla track (additional permit required, subject to availability and at a cost of USD 750 per person), or choose from one of many options available to you. There is much to explore here…..Track the endangered golden monkeys at a cost of USD 100 per person….Trek to Dian Fossey’s grave and the gorilla cemetery, the final resting place of her favourite gorilla, Digit. Take a guided walk to Lake Bulera, to experience local village life. Escourted bird watching walks and mountain bike excursions…A visit to Iby’Iwacu cultural village and Buhanga Scared Forest Overnight at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge (B, L, D)
DAY 4: KIGALI TO NAIROBI
Today after breakfast you will be transferred back to Kigali airport for flight back to Nairobi.
SABYINYO SILVERBACK LODGE
Accommodation at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge comprises five double cottages, two suites and one family suite. All are stone buildings with Rwandese terracotta tile roofs, and feature large sitting areas, fireplaces, stylish en-suite bathrooms finished with Venetian plaster a dressing room and a sheltered veranda. Heat exchangers in the fireplaces provide a plentiful supply of hot water. The main lodge building comprises reception, sitting room with snug area, dining room, library / games room, a responsible tourism / community awareness room, shop and bathrooms. Three large fireplaces provide warmth and all rooms are finished with a polished wooden floor. Two patio areas afford wonderful and dramatic views to the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding lowland farmland.
